Day 59

Pain in shins. Not good. Ran 1.1 miles at 5.3 mph. Gonna have to take it slow in order to keep going.

Thursday, February 28, 2008

Day 58

OK so every two days or so, for some reason I get it into my head that I've suddenly become Edwin Moses and try to run too far and too fast. Did it again today, and probably messed up my shins, oh well. Ran 2.8 miles. Time is estibated at 31 minutes or so. Ran the first 2 miles in 21 minutes and change. First four minutes were at 6.2mph, then I started alternating between 6.5 and 5.5, then after a while it was 6.5 for a min, 5.0 for a min, 5.5 for a min, and then I started walking and going back and then just all walking. Achilles/heel is painful, shins are painful the day after. 17 days to go. My sister is coming!

Day 57

So I got a little mixed up on my numbering. I didn't miss a day, I just got a head of myself. I ran one mile, 3/4 at 5.5 mph and 1/4 at 6, 6.5, 7, adn 7.5 mph. Time was 10:04. Need to go farther....Lungs are still bad, neck is getting better. Day 57 means there are 18 days until the race. I know I can go that far, but to do it well...

Week eight totals

This was a bit of a down week due to the sickness, but it is a completed week nonetheless.

Total mileage: 9.9 miles
Total time: 116:21 minutes
Average: 1.41 miles in 16:37

Day 56

Another one mile of pain. Strained my neck yesterday, can't even turn my head. Need to start doing some back exercises. Anyway ran one mile at 5.5 mph (10:54.) Pain. Done. Happy. Sister is coming to run the 5k, yeah! We will be wearing some serious green...

Monday, February 25, 2008

Day 55

So this was the most painful one mile at a ridiculously slow pace (5mph/12 mins) that I have done the entire time. Sore/hurting from yesterday. I did make it, but just barely. Whopeee fifty five days. Who cares? (That is my twisted, evil mind talking that wants me to quit.)

Day 54

OK what in the world was I thinking. I wanted to do a "longer" run so I asked my wife what kind of workout I should do. Then I went to the gym to do it. However as has happened about 3-4 times I fail to recall before I drive all the way there that on Sat/Sun the place closes at 6pm. thus I am left with running this outside, in the dark, in the "cold" weather. (My sister just ran the "Freeze your buns off 5-k" in Grand Forks ND. It was ten degrees. Descriptors are often relative.) So workout that killed me off was, five minutes of jogging warmup, run one minute HARD (not quite sprinting, though it was often as hard as I could go) then slow down and run two minutes slow, repeat this a total of ten times (thirty minutes) and then run five more minutes of cool down. Ouch this was hard, pain and suffering. I was barely running as fast as a walk if not slower at times. I did a total of 3.4 miles in just under forty two minutes (took longer to get back than go out.) I was hurting throughout and especially at the end. I don't like to hurt this much. Whose idea was it to run this much anyway? I did do the whole workout so it was an accomplishment I guess? My wife describes this as weight lifting for running. Great. I'd rather lift a twinkie.

Day 53

Friday. Ran 1 miles at 6 mph (10 mins) then walked one minute and ran another .2 miles at 6mph (2 minutes.) 1.2 miles in 12 minutes. Walked a while afterwards. Trying to up the pace here. You run faster you don't have to suffer as long right?

Friday, February 22, 2008

Day 52

Forgot my shoes, imagine that. Decided to run outside. = Really stupid ideas when your lungs are sick. Ahhh that burning sensation. Anyway, ran 1.6 miles (the famous-to-me out and back loop,) in 17:37. That is my world record by far. I figured that it was 5.5 mph which with all the silly hills on that route I feel pretty good about. Feeling pretty good was not how I felt at the end of the run, instead it was more like hacking up a lung. Waddle on.

Week Seven Totals

Total Mileage: 10.5 miles (not bad considering the crud)
Total Time: 121:21
Average Mileage: 1.5 miles in 17:19.

Got through some sickness and ready to move on! 24 days until the 5-k "race."

Day 51

Ran 2 miles in 21:50. Sick but getting better. I actually felt pretty good. Crazy enough to think that I can do 5k in under 30 minutes. Have to keep upping the speed, but the lungs feel pretty good. Heels are tight, that would be the only issue.

Waddle on!

It's my adopted mantra. Here is a fun except from a RW article.

"The late Dr. George Sheehan, beloved Runner's World columnist and arguably the first running boom's premier philosopher, once wrote that the difference between a runner and a jogger was a signature on a race application. (For the youngsters out there, there was a time before online registration when you actually filled out a paper application, signed it, attached a check, and mailed it in. Quaint, I know.) As succinct as Dr. Sheehan's definition was, it made the point. If you were motivated enough to train for and participate in an organized running event, then you were a runner. Anyone willing to risk public failure in order to be a part of the running community--no matter what his or her pace per mile might be--was a runner. Period. Kind of hard for anyone to argue with that logic. But a few months ago, an ad ran in this magazine that drew a very hard line between runners and joggers. I immediately heard from tons of readers who were upset by the distinction. To me, however, such definitions are meaningless, since those of us who call ourselves runners already know why we call ourselves runners. Your reasons may be different from mine, but here's why I know I am a runner:

I AM A RUNNER because my runs have names. I do tempo runs and threshold runs and fartlek runs. I do long, slow runs and track workouts. My runs are defined, even if my abs are not.

I AM A RUNNER because my shoes are training equipment, not a fashion statement. The best shoe for me is the one that makes me a better runner. I choose the shoe that goes with my running mechanics, not my running outfit.

I AM A RUNNER because I don't have running outfits. I have technical shirts and shorts and socks. I have apparel that enhances the experience of running by allowing me to run comfortably. I can say "Coolmax" and "Gore-Tex" in the same sentence and know which does what.

I AM A RUNNER because I know what effort feels like, and I embrace it. I know when I'm pushing the limits of my comfort and why I'm doing it. I know that heavy breathing and an accelerated heart rate--things I once avoided--are necessary if I want to be a better runner.

I AM A RUNNER because I value and respect my body. It will whisper to me when I've done too much. And if I choose to listen to that whisper, my body won't have to scream in pain later on.

I AM A RUNNER because I am willing to lay it all on the line. I know that every finish line has the potential to lift my spirits to new highs or devastate me, yet I line up anyway.

I AM A RUNNER because I know that despite my best efforts, I will always want more from myself. I will always want to know my limits so that I can exceed them.

I AM A RUNNER because I run. Not because I run fast. Not because I run far.

I AM A RUNNER because I say I am. And no one can tell me I'm not.

Waddle on, friends.

Day 50

So this is actually the post for day 49, and the post for day 49 was actually day 50. No one reads this so it doesn't really matter. I ran one mile, very slowly trying to get through this crud that I have. Exciting stuff really. Maybe I should post some wav files of my hacking. That would add...flavor.

Day 49

Ran one mile at 5.5 mph pace. 10:54. Sick but getting better. Wish I was done with this junk. Almost to 50 days, sounds like another milestone, time to celebrate. :)

Monday, February 18, 2008

Day 48

Went to the gym, and jogged one mile slow. One more day down. Lungs don't work, but made it through. This would be nice to be done with, the sickness that is. Hey my sister said she is comign to visit! Awesomeness. That gives me motivation to keep running...

Sunday, February 17, 2008

Day 47

I ran 1.4 miles today outside which was a huge mistake. Today I am sick. my lungs, throat etc were on fire by the end. This is going to be the first test of whether I am going to make this. Feel like crap.

Saturday, February 16, 2008

Day 46

Ran 3.1 miles in 35:06. Ran all of it at 5.3mph. Got it done, starting to get a cold. Legs don't feel perfect, but not really bad either. Keep on keepin'on. Less than 30 days til the first 5-k. Want to run less than 30 minutes, but perhaps that is not realistic. Have to check and see what my first practice 5-k was at, there probably wasn't that much improvement. Course running with people might make it faster, but then it will be outside so it will be slower. We'll give it a shot.

Friday, February 15, 2008

Day 45

Valentine's Day. Ran 1.5 miles in 16:10? Started at 5.3 mph for most of the time bumped up to 5.5 for a couple of minutes and finishedat 6mph. Sort of need to make this distance and speed the new gold standard. Thirty days until the St. Patrick's day 5-k. They changed the location, I hope it is as flat as the old one...It also costs more :(. Word is getting around about my fabulousness. http://yourhopedefinesyou.blogspot.com

Day 44

Ran one mile, short break then ran another .25 for 1.25 total. A little shin/heel pain but nothing too significant. Time? probably 14:20 or so. This was a recovery day.

Wednesday, February 13, 2008

Day 43

Ran one mile in 8:55. New record in the current epoch. Started at 6.5 mph for two minutes, then 6.7 for about five minutes, 6.9 for 1:30 and 7.0 for the last :30. Then jogged .25 miles for a cooldown.

Tuesday, February 12, 2008

Week six totals

Totals:

Distance: 11.9 miles

Time: 138:15

Average: 1.7 miles in 19:44

so long, so very long

Day 42

Ran 1.25 miles at 5.2 mph in 14;27? Sound familiar, guess I need to up the off day runs to a little longer/faster. Unofficial week five totals were 11.5 miles, that is the most so far so that isn't too bad. Got in three longer runs and started lifting again. Isn't this all terribly exciting? I'm bored by it so I can't imagine the pain if you aren't me, or if you are...

Monday, February 11, 2008

Day 41

Nice day outside, 50 degrees or so. Ran outside. Antelope Ridge to Stetson Hills to Peterson back to Antelope Ridge. Stupid watch aint working so not sure exactly on the time. Judging by songs on the MP3 player it was approx. 32 minutes. Jogged very slowly, but I made it the whole way. Looking at gmaps pedometer it was about 2.5 miles. (Low side estimate.) Felt pretty good to get it done.

Day 40

40 days and nights. Another milestone, albeit minor. Have to note the Biblical correlatives. Ran 1.25 miles at the gym. 14:30. Lifted weights again. Move on to the next day.

Day 39

Friday. I have to stop posting on Monday for the whole weekend because I can't remember that far back. I ran. At the gym. On the treadmill. 1 mile. Terrible run. No energy. Angry. Upset at the events of the day. Family. Schultz. 11:30? Got it done, that is about it.

Friday, February 8, 2008

Day 38

Ran for 30 minutes at 5.2 mph. Covered 2.65 miles. Heels are tight and sore, but other than that, not too bad.

Thursday, February 7, 2008

Week 5 totals

Distance 9.25 miles

Time 105:30

Average: 1.32 miles in 15:04.

Fairly average. Going to try and get in three "long" runs per week to increase distance, just need to make the time. And workout, and read....

Day 37

Had short time again, so I tried to do a timed mile. 9:42, then ran another quarter at 5.2 for 1.25 total. 9:42 was the fastest mile I've done which is pitifully slow, but I felt pretty good. No pain, just a lot of gasping for air at the end. Started at 6mph, went up to 6.1 then 6.2 finished at 7 to try and get it under the 9:47 of my last timed mile. Improvement is good right?

Day 36

OK so I don't even really remember this day. Stayed home from work with sick family members. Ran at the gym. Went 2.0 miles in 23 minutes approximately. Pace varied 5.2 and 5.5 mph. Wanted to get in 30 minutes but legs were hurting.

Tuesday, February 5, 2008

Day 35

So there is cutting it close and cutting it close. Things happened today, called life, and I didn't get the run in til approximately 11:45pm. Then I sprinted two .5 mile laps around my house. Did I mention that it is February? And it has been snowing? and the wind is blowing? and it is cold? I guess that made me go faster...I dunno. 11:33. 5 weeks down....Need to start doing three 30 minutes runs per week. We shall see.

Monday, February 4, 2008

Day 34

Didn't get it done until the end of the day. Taped the super bowl and watched it after church, ran at halftime, which for us was about 11pm. Ran two .5 mile laps. No energy, no lungs, sheer will power. Didn't quit, ran a negative split (horse heading to the barn?) major victory. Plod on!
Time was 11:45 (hilly course...:)

day 33

At the gym, picking up the pace. 5.5 and 6mph for 1.5. Time is 16 minues and change. I was mad at the time, helped me run faster. Watched the hilltop game before hand. Could there be a relation? I'll let you figure that one out.

Day 32

Friday ran for 1.25miles. Trying to remember the time. Hard to remember things from three days a go. Starting to up the pace a bit. 5.5 mph mostly so 13:15 I believe. Miles to go before I sleep....

Friday, February 1, 2008

One month update

Hey milestones are a good thing right? 31 days in a row is the most I've ever run. Even competing in sports in high school and college I never did that. Am I crazier now? Maybe in a few little ways. You have to grasp for those in the midst of your need to be a responsible husband and father figure role (please do not read this as I want something different, i don't.)

Total Mileage: 43.09
Total time: 487:30 minutes

Average mileage: 1.39
Average time: 15:43

Not bad at all! At this rate, over the course of the year I would have covered approx 517 miles. If I don't increase any more which I hope to. This is going to take a lot of time. Already at 80 hours, a couple of work weeks! As the column in Runner's World occassionally says, Keep Plodding! (or something to that effect, shuffle on friends?)

Day 31

Legs, (shins and knees) are still hurting a little bit. Wanted to do a longer run, so I told myself hit 1.25 miles and then see how you feel, then I hit that and extended to 1.5 and said the same thing. Then I just kept going to 20 minutes, then told/tricked myself by saying 2 miles is only 3.5 minutes away. So I did 2.0 miles in 23:30. Slow, but it went ok. Lungs are pretty good, if it was a matter of just that I would be fine. Gotta trim up some to decrease the load. :) One month down! 11 to go...
My three year old this morning told me I couldn't quit, so that is the final word....
