Day 30

Didn't make it until the end of the day. Ran 1.25 miles in 11:47, heard that before? I need to up distance and speed, but don't want to cause injury. Go on how things feel I guess. Lungs feel good, really no doubt at any time I can make these distances, even up to 5k I think. 30 days down. Almost one month. 11 more to go.

Day 29

Ran 1.25 miles at the gym. Found my mp3 player under the seat of my car. Yeah! 14:47 ish. Getting some leg/knee/shin/heel pain. Might need to start icing afterwards. Is this the beginning of the end? Only time will tell.

Week 4 total

Ran 10.25 miles. That is a lot more than I thought it would be. It mounts up I guess.
Time (big guess) 113 minutes. Average is 11 minutes/mile. Its actually probably more like 11:45-12.

Guess it was a good week, starting to feel some twinges in my lower legs. Been trying to do more stretching to compensate. 28 days down...338 to go.....
do I have to do the Leap day?

Day 28

At the gym, still can't find the mp3 player. *sigh* Ran one mile, legs twinging a bit. Ran actually one mile, walked one minute, ran another .25, walked two minutes, ran another .25. 1.5 total. Approx. 17:37 time. Not sure if I'm improving at all. Lungs are better, just the legs/joints holding up is the big thing right now. I predict the end of this will be an injury, but that isn't really going to stop me from trying this. Need more weights, need more reading.

Day 27

Sunday afternoon at the gym means no one is there. Its much nicer that way, as opposed to Monday evening when people start their regime again only to fade by Wednesday. I know the feeling, but not this time! 27 days in a row. Did I mention that I lost my cell phone again. /cry

Day 26

Late night run, didn't get it done earlier. This means that I ran outside. Plodded through two .5 mile laps in 12:20 ish. Really wanted to stop and be done. Stopped walked for 2:20 and then ran one more .5 mile lap. This was a moral victory. Yeah. Shall I celebrate?

Day 25

1.25 miles at the gym 11:47. Getting repetitive here, but I guess that is the point. New gold standard 1.25 at 5.1 mph is firmly in place. Need to get back to lifting as well. This stuff takes a lot of time...

Day 24

Testing my memory here. 1.25 miles in 11:30ish. On the treadmill at the gym. Terribly exciting. I'm sure that the pour souls reading this are terribly enthralled.

Day 23

I've probably mentioned this before, however I think it is generally a good idea to buy all dress shoes from running shoe manufacturers. For example my "dress" shoes are made by New Balance. The reason that this is useful, is that when you forget your "running" shoes at home which I frequently do, you can still go for a nice short 1 mile jog in 11:37. Just lose the dress socks...

Three Week Summary

OK a little over three weeks down and here is what we have seen so far.

Week One 8.5 miles covered. 94 minutes and 47 seconds. Average is 1.21 miles in 13:34. Not bad!

Week Two 10.24 miles covered. 114 minutes approx. Average is 1.46 miles in 16:16 moving up!

Week Three 9.6 miles covered. 112:47 minutes approx. Average is 1.37 miles in 16:07. Keep going!

So here is the site I think it would be neat to be on. The US Running Streak Assoc. If you run for at least 365 days in a row, one mile continuously then you can join the club. There are currently 161 people listed with active streaks. It would be cool to be on the list. It's in God's hands but I am going to give it a shot!

Day 22

Went to the gym. Prior to that I prayed again that I would somehow be able to find my missing MP3 player and what do you know it was found right after that. Yes you could be cynical and say coincidence, I accept that, but to me it was a big praise. Ran 1.25 miles at 5.1 mph (my other new temporary gold standard.) Felt fairly good, little twinges in the shins but nothing major. Watched the pitiful michigan wolverines sticking with the #11 ranked badgers. Always nice to have something to watch.

Day 21

Well my wife talked me into running outside. Weather was nice - snowing, somewhat warm (relatively) and about two-three inches of crystal powder on the ground already. It was perfect skiing snow, very soft, but not melting. Ran about 1.25 miles (my gold standard now) in a very slow time. Three weeks down, 49 to go....

Day 20

Today, my thought is that it really is no big deal to have some big slow dude "jog" slowly over a mile each day. Thus I stepped up to 1.25 miles. Oooh impressive, just don't look into the big mirror. Then it doesn't look quite as impressive. Ouch.

Day 19

Another sort of maintenance run. Got in a mile in about 12 minutes and called it day 19. Because it was.

Day 18

Hmm waited too long to post. Ran after work. Ran a mile and lifted weights. Slow, a little tired from yesterday.

Day 17

Sometimes, when I'm running on the treadmill. I go crazy. I think I can do more than I should. So today I sort of decided that since I have to run a 5k, that maybe I should run a 5k right now. So I did. 36:06. Most was run at 5.1 mph (11:45 miles) with a four minute stint where I upped it .1 mph / minute, then the last couple of minutes were at 5.5 just cus I need to have a good sprint at the end. 3 minutes walking warmup and about 5-6 minutes walking cool down. I actually felt pretty good. No pain in the legs or anything, though tomorrow might be a different story.

Day 16

3 minute walking warmup. Ran one mile on the treadmill in 9:57. Breaking 10 minutes for some would mean actually starting to run, but it was an accomplishment for me. Walked three more minutes, ran an additional minute then walked a couple more. 16 days, what do you get at 16 days? Nothing.

Day 15

One more day that got away from me. Left to run 2x around the .5 mile block behind our house in the cold and with the headlamp and with my really long stocking hat that was bunched up and made me look like I had a beehive hair do. First lap in 6:29, second lap in 5:45. Short walking warm up and cool down and called it a very short day that is done.

Day 14

Went to the gym. I seem to have lost my mp3 player, bummer. Think I left it at the gym. Stinks. Ran 1 mile in 11:30 ish, rested 1 min, ran 1 min 6mph, rested min, ran 1 min @ 6mph. So about 1.2 miles total. Lifted weights afterwards. Saw Lanny and said hello. No reading.

Day 13

One of those days where you really just want to take a break. Busy Sunday with visitors so didn't have a chance to run until about 7:15pm. Went to the gym thinking they might still be open, but they weren't. They close at 6. I knew this, perhaps I was just being hopeful. That means headlamp time. I ran the big block around our house twice for just about 1 mile exactly. I did it in 12:35, negative splits of 6:30 and 6:05. Gotta finish strong.

Day 12

Ran with the wifey! A friend is staying with us this week, so we put the kids down and went for a run together. Fairly cold, but we did it together which was fun. We thought it was 2 miles, but we checked on Gmap pedometer and it was 2.34 miles. Longest run so far, and I did the whole thing with no stops. Fun stuff. Running with my wife is fun. She is cool.

Day 11

Another day at the gym. Ran two miles at 5mph. Long run felt good. Lifted weights afterward. Got it done.

Day 10

Went to the gym, yeah. Can you believe they want to charge $10 for a guest pass? So they are charging you to do free marketing for them and bring a friend who might get a member ship and make them more money? Nutso. Anyways, 3 minute warmup and 20 minutes of 5mph running. It helps to actually have your running shoes. 4 minute cooldown. Gonna run a 5k on St.Patrick's day. Should be fun.

Day 9

For a second I thought I should start putting the date on these days to keep them straight. Then I remembered that day 9 = 1/9/08. There isn't much confusion there. So I got to the gym after work and realized I had forgotten my running shoes. Normally this would mean, no workout for me. However, when you are doing the Longest Run (insert copyright symbol) there are no take a break days. Therefore I jogged a mile (5mph) in my dress shoes. Then I lifted weights. It helps that my dress shoes are made by New Balance and not Armani, but it was a little awkward. I left the dress socks on, just for

Day 8

Day 8 - getting to those squeeze it in days. Ran the outside route because there wasn't time to get to the gym. 14:37 for the 1.25 miles. Snowy, icy, listened to a new mp3 playlist and my mp3 player for the first time in the streak. I think it helped get me going. I'm past the one week mark! Only 51 more weeks to go.

Day 7

Day 7 Drove like crazy through new snow to get to the gym for a sprint to the gym a quick one mile on the treadmill (10:27.) Then followed a sprint back to the van and a wild ride home to get back for the guild run. Snow was falling and there were very few people at the gym. First three minutes were at 6mph, then dropped down to 5.5 mph.

Day 6

Day 6 - Ran the same route as yesterday. It took 16:07 for the running part. Mostly because it was late at night in about two inches of snow and ice. I wore a headlamp and was seriously hard core IMHO. The whole running outside thing is probably not my favorite thing to do in January, but it is a change.

I've been reading Psalms 30 for the last two days. Three out of four ain't bad unless you are trying to hit 365 in a row. Back is sore, hopefully it gets better.

Day Five

It is a Saturday. Ventured forth to the great outdoors since it was in the mid 50s and I wanted to get it done without having to go to the gym. After the wife ran home I went and ran from our house to Stetson Hills rd (including a three minute walk warmup and stretching.) I ran 14:43 in very windy weather. It was with me on the way out, and up the hill, and against me on the way back and down the hill, which I think is about as good as you can get it. The wifey said it is .7 to Stetson Hills which means I would have done about 1.25 miles today. Forgot to mention that I got new running shoes yesterday? Nice. Exciting. They look funny. They are this weird bright, almost electric blue. They are comfy, but perhaps a little tight. Size 12 instead of 12.5. No one makes 12.5 it would seem. Got them at Boulder Running Company, had really good experiences there before, but not this time. Guy just wanted me out of there I think, kept making excuses for things. Anyway, the shoes are a lot better than my annhilated pair I had before, I don't think they are as "cushy" (technical term of my own devices) but I hope they last 360 more days, that would be a lot of miles actually. I thought about naming my shoes, thinking they should have names related to the topics of pain and suffering, not my own but their's from being pounded by my immense girth. ;) Ha ha ha, I made a funny.

Day Four

Three minute walk warmup. Ran 20 minutes at 5mph pace. Walked about 7 minutes for cooldown. Distance running was 1.5 miles. So doing this on the treadmill, it is dark at night and the treadmills are right next to the windows. When the sun goes down the staff thinks it is a great idea to pull up the blinds so you can "see" out the windows. The problem is that it is dark outside and bright inside so the only thing you can see is yourself...running...this is not a good thing to me and hardly motivational. Read Obadiah again, yesterday at least.

Day Three

Three minute walk warmup. Ran one mile in 10:47. Walked about thirteen more minutes. Exciting. Whose idea was this anyway?

Day Two

Ran a total of 1.5 miles. First mile was 10:51. Three minute walk break and then .5 miles at 5mph. first mile was mostly at 5.5 mph with a bit of 6mph thrown in. a bit sore but not too bad. i cannot use the shift key currently because my keyboard is messed up.

Day One

1/1/08 1 mile run - 11:45. Last minute was at 6mph pace, rest was at 5mph pace. Watched part of UM vs Florida. Seeing Hart fumble on the goal line inspired me to run faster. Walked about 20 minutes total.

Read Obadiah for the 4th time. V1 the "vision" of the prophet Obadiah. Wonder what that vision was like.
